Wardrobe Design:Coral, Grey, Ecru, Khaki

When choosing things for your wardrobe, they must fit your style and each other. This is part of our series of posts that show a "capsule" built around a particular item.

Our stylish friend has a unique printed blouse and wants to build some options around it. Her usual look is ladylike and conservative, but she enjoys a few quirks here and there for some fun. To build on the blouse we added:

 Clothing:
1. A red/coral draped skirt.
2. A charcoal fine knit tee.
3. Cream and grey striped trousers
4. A khaki safari jacket
5. Charcoal tweed pencil skirt.
6. Coral cardigan with floral trim.

 Accessories:
1. Coral Clutch
2. Ecru Handbag
3. Coral Oversize handbag
4. Charcoal felted kitten heel
 5. Ecru Pumps

These items go together easily, and can be worn with or without the original shirt. All of the pieces are going to mix and match very easily in with other color palettes in her wardrobe, and the shoes are particularly wardrobe friendly.

The Basics of Personal Style: Pencil Skirts

Continuing in our series of claiming basics for your own, lets look at the pencil skirt.  The pencil skirt or straight skirt is a true business basic, and often recommended in black, navy or charcoal. However, if you are developing your personal style, you may want to consider choosing one that fits best with your overall look. Below are some examples of pencil skirts that while still can be work to work, also have a little dose of something different.

Rocker Chic at Work

When choosing things for your wardrobe, they must fit your style and each other. This is part of our series of posts that show a “capsule” built around a particular item.

Our stylish friend scored an Alexander McQueen Jacket, and would like to wear it to work. Her usual look has a bit of an edge, and she'd like her work look to go as well. To build on the jacket we added:

  • Tops: 2 tanks, a red blouse and a striped sweater.
  • Bottoms: 2 skinny twill pants, 1 slouchy pant, one leather pencil skirt
  • Dress: Sheath dress
  • Accessories: 2 pairs of booties, a fringe necklace, a scarf, cuff bracelet, studded bag

Here are some mix and match ideas for the items:

The Basics: The Quintessential Blouse

Look in any style guide, and you will see every one recommends a white blouse / button down shirt as one of the most versatile items in your closet. For some people this is 100% true.  A beautifully simple button down with a collar is perfect for their closet. But before you drop into your local Brooks Brothers, consider what fits into your life and your closet. Will that very conservative blouse match your whimsical skirts, or your denim skinny jeans? If not, think about an option that will. Alternatives can be found in just about any style, and at any price point. Take a look at some of these examples. Would something like one of these fit your closet and lifestyle better?
